dear readers,

i have been stopped in the street various times with concerns over the origin of sunday funnies.
i was trapped in an airport between planes on the way to new york city. all i had was a specific section of the newspaper. boredom pushed me to see what the funnies section had in store. it was mediocre, bland and so by-the-books it numbed my tongue.
so i opted to start a funnies section right here.
it may be on an irregular schedule but it will also hopefully be a nice respite from the tissue paper we have now masquerading as funnies.
we will have some friends and guests participating too.

i wrote two songs last night: CLUB FUN, about a club 40 floors
underground where you hide sobs between bass beats. with no room to
dance you stand then eventually lie down, where a stranger holds your
hands as you suffocate within a crowd. other song was MY BOYFRIEND,
about a girl so suspicious of her boy that she opts to destroy him due
to paranoia about a manual that makes a man perfect, preferring him
dead or broken than perfect for her, yet subjectively soulless. it was
a complex structure interweaving hatred and longing.

both are gone.
this is the only way i can sing them to you now.

All control ultimately relies upon manipulation of behavior. In culture, the cut-up is still a modification of, or an alternate, language. It can reveal, describe and measure control. It can do damage but that is not enough. Magick as a method is a cut-up process that goes further than description. It is infused with emotion, intuition, instinct and impulse, and includes emotions and feelings. It operates actually within the same medium, “behavior,” as control. It is therefore essential as a system to challenge, emasculate and render impotent the source of control itself.

i am proud to announce LAZERFEST.
this is a partial transcript from an interview made earlier this month for Nichts Nowhere Magazin coming out in September Nicht.

WHAT PRECISELY IS LAZERFEST?
it's a night for everybody to have fun. it's a celebration as night unfolds .

WHAT IS IN STORE FOR THE AUDIENCE?
as an artist i am a natural organizer. pixels are like little children i viciously beat into corners. occasionally they're insolent creatures with swollen little red faces that i shove into bowls of milk when the whim snares me. the milk is a metaphor for purity. the swollen red face; a thinly veiled reference to my mother - a workhorse of woman. the force and violence are the horrible forces that ultimately form beautiful things. i once slashed a painting in half in a fit of rage. i also had a video locked in a cellar and fed it rats. being an artist is a hard business, objects retain pieces of you. for LAZEREST my collaborators and i are taking a more generous route than the brutalization of inanimate objects, with three new book releases, special performances by artists and friends, and a special program of video works on view for the reception. oh, these videos have killed me. they have given me moments of pure light. they have torn out my stomach, stepped on my hands and fed me glass. they've given me the joy that let me escape to be another and - in doing so - to understand others. they themselves are self-contained celebrations. we have two venues for the night with the reception and curated performances at Krowswork Gallery in participation with the SUMMER OF VIDEO ART put together by Jasmine Moorhead and then onto Site B at Bhopal where we'll really turn up the heat.

ABOUT THESE VIDEOS. IS THERE A THEME BEHIND THEM?
yes. Lions and Altars. i've acquired these videos in various ways over the course of seven years. each one is a story. it is a strange collection because it is a personal one. this is the first and perhaps only time i will show them this way. the setting is ideal for it; the room is an altar. the videos are like streams, perfect to lose one's self. and I certainly invite everyone to.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST MOVE TO SAN FRANCISCO?
7 years ago on Aug 26th. the body regenerates all living cells every seven years so the bay area has imbued each cell with the same person i was born as.

WHAT ARE THE BOOKS YOU ARE RELEASING?
one is a compilation of comic strips from artists i've organized in collaboration with Zebratron Press called LINE LAND. it was a thoughtful selection and a challenge for a few artists to deal with format-wise, which led to some very interesting results. the second book is a collaboration with Peter Hurley put together by Keenan Keller of Drippy Bone Books of Los Angeles called DEATH TRIP. it's been a labor of love for the better part of a year and - if i can avoid any bullshit modesty - feel it lives up to its premise. i would shove my head into a furnace but instead live off compliments on my drawings. this is mostly from my liking how it all comes together in a really weird way. the last book is called COSMIC BUMMER FUNNIES, an all new selection of comic strips i made during spring and make available here as a limited edition book, again in collaboration with Zebratron Press.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THE COMIC STRIP FORMAT?
i was trapped in an airport with only the sunday newspaper funnies section one time. the mediocrity of those things enraged me. i think that being an artist is a risk-taker's business so opted to make my own out of rage.

WHY AT TWO VENUES?
because celebrations have certain features we like to exploit and phases appeal to me. we will begin with the formal unveiling of the new books. Douglas Katelus will open the night with his rendition of the atom heart mother suite synched with "jupiter and beyond the infinite" from 2001 a space odyssey. this is his own arrangment on hammond organ and it's beautiful. this will be followed by HORAFLORA, an oakland performance artist and musician i admire, whose work sounds like a body levitating off the ground in a movie, and then a special guest i can't say here. these walls have ears.

you son of a bitch. i thought that was a beard trimmer. what is this? a sony piece of shit. man they get smaller all the time. and i thought your friend over there was jotting all this shit down. you son of bitch. jesus. you germans are a funny bunch. you know what i read once that always reminds me of germans?

COULD YOU PLEASE CONTINUE?
with this harmonious first act, we'll intermittently screen works and drink deep of the video vague. Jasmine Moorhead put in a lot of sweat to get SOVA together and i'm more than happy to participate in this medium and also work closely with all these artists to celebrate it and the thriving scene happening right now. it'll be wonderful. and when the clock hits eleven "poof" we'll head to the Site B where LAZERFEST heats up. Granny Zebra's WrongDisco's gonna tear it up with a new set of soundworks, as various friends i deeply admire; Nuclear Death Wish, Tears Club, Great Willow, Omori, First Family, DilatedEars, and Goldwave taking turns turning the night into a shaking fever house.

WHAT IS THIS "SHAKING FEVER HOUSE"?
you ever read gilgamesh? when the devil character finally gets his revenge on gilgamesh's sidekick he drags him by his foot into hell and gilgamesh can hear the kid describing the walls melting and getting all scary-like. i think oakland house parties are similar to this but FUNNER, don't you?

I HAVE NEVER BEEN TO THIS OAKLAND.
well, the second venue is a continuation of the first with emphasis upon music and - symbolically - the future. ha ha, i'm messing with you about all that metaphor stuff. but, independent publishers will be present and i'll be hosting. it will be fun. i'm celebrating everything i've come to cherish in the bay area. the independents, the soundmakers, the dreamers, the assholes. you are invited!

THE FINAL GIRL is an exhibition meditating on the conventions of the horror and psychedelic film within the context of a video store installation. The show includes an exhibition of works in various mediums, a video viewing lounge, and a video store where visitors can rent DVD compilations and standalone DVDs of various artists' video works surrounding the show's premise. The Final Girl explores themes of feminism in the electronic visual age, exploiting cinematic conventions of the horror genre, which is notoriously known for its ambiguous treatment of the female narrative center. Instead of focusing on horror and psychedelia as tools for populist consensus and social anxiety, the exhibition will raise questions about these genres' grotesque and celebratory treatment of the female body.

for a long time now i've been obsessed with the nature of VUE (violent unknown event) lightning as described in a chapter 79 of Peter Greenaway's The Falls. neurosis and other ailments of the mind are also of keen interest - specifically fugue states and moments of cognitive dissonance. this images captures the moment of transformation and surrender of the flesh unto those demons.

MAGIC HOUSE SHOW

i have a new show at a magic house: POP UP.
there is a periscope in the bathroom.
the stairs are made with bundles of colorful pencils.
it's a dreamy place. we'll be taking up the cellar and have milkmen give tours.
there will be a lot of music. there's an antique bowling arcade game.
it will be held at this rad place on January 28th. there may be an expanded version of FFF for this occasion.

there's a certain terror i find when i gaze in the past. there's a devil town like the ones in songs.

it's not on fire though.

oh it's so beautiful that its pain bends light. it is beyond description - that beauty - as well as ever communicating how terribly sad that place made me.
